Notes: | Outlines and examines the methodology and findings of a six-month follow-up research project aimed at exploring the effects of providing battered women with access to social supports needed to escape violent relationships and sets out a new methodology for analysing the processes women undergo in leaving their abusive partners. A review of existing research relating to battered women’s help-seeking efforts, their perceptions of the effectiveness of community responses and their experiences of support from family and friends is also provided. The findings of the US study suggest that providing women with post-shelter advocacy services results in short-term positive outcomes but is not, of itself, sufficient to foster long-term substantive change. It is argued that to be effective, advocacy services should be provided on an ‘as needed’ basis and must be accompanied by broader systems-level changes, such as the provision of adequate housing and the enhanced availability of legal assistance. A coordinated community response to intimate partner violence that addresses women’s needs at a variety of levels is advocated. |
