Notes:	Reports on the development, implementation and evaluation of an early identification and intervention model for domestic violence in a hospital Emergency Department (ED). Includes background research and earlier attempts to screen for domestic violence. A case study compares the effectiveness of the Emergency Department procedure with and without an early identification and intervention model for domestic violence. Outlines the characteristics of the model, including the use of flowcharts displayed in prominent positions in the ED. The model was evaluated through the administration of a questionnaire to nursing staff and an audit of referrals to the Social Work Department. Concludes that education about domestic violence was associated with increased referrals to social workers. Implementation of the model also stimulated the development of protocols for dealing with domestic violence, elder abuse and sexual assault, through a process of consultation with key interagency stakeholders.
