Based on the author’s experience in working with families in which children are abusive towards their parents, this article draws upon the case histories of ‘Anna’ and ‘Mark’ to illustrate some of the patterns that can develop in the context of adolescent violence towards parents. A review of literature on the topic and the various reasons this kind of violence has been largely neglected by researchers is conducted, and key trends identified in the clinical sample – such as the tendency for perpetrators to be male and victims female – are examined. Power dynamics of child-parent abusive relationships are also discussed and a range of strategies for intervention are considered.
