Notes:  Describes a project in which an antenatal assessment is used to identify psychosocially-at-risk expectant women. The programme was conducted at Wodonga Regional Health Services, Victoria, during a six-month period. A self-administered questionnaire, followed by an interview of the pregnant women by a midwife, was used to detect antenatal and possible postnatal depression, domestic violence, and risk of abusing or neglecting their children. A positive risk assessment tool was derived, and showed general acceptance by both the expectant women themselves and the midwives involved in the procedure, though some felt it was a little too invasive and time consuming, and that it could initiate difficulties of which they had little training.
