Notes:  Nurses in the clinical setting may identify intimate partner violence (IPV) through routine screening or indicator-based screening of both victims and perpetrators. It is then necessary to make an assessment of the situation, including what risk factors are present, and to ensure follow-up.

This article focuses on dealing with a patient who may be a perpetrator. It offers steps to follow in assessing the perpetrator, documenting findings, providing information to the perpetrator and making appropriate referrals.

It provides scenarios of ‘missed opportunities’ based on original research conducted by these authors where several more questions posed to a perpetrator/patient might have led to better outcomes in dealing with IPV.
