Notes:  Provides an overview of recent research into community reactions to domestic violence, laypersons’ theories of abuse and assault and the various factors which can impact on jury decision making in criminal trials of battered women. Presents the purpose, methodology and results of a study set in Victoria aimed at exploring attributions of responsibility and causality in domestic violence situations, and other beliefs about the behaviours and affective states of individuals involved. Argues that although there is no clear tendency towards victim blaming, people have a wide diversity of ideas about what causes domestic violence and these attributions are largely related to perceptions of the perpetrator and victim and beliefs about the significance of the role of alcohol. Discusses some of the legal, social and research implications of the study.
