Authors: Mitchell, Liesl
Keywords: Community attitudes;Overview;Statistics;Economic costs;Risk factors;Risk assessment
Year: 2011
Publisher: Department of Parliamentary Services
Notes:  This background paper provides an overview of the prevalence of domestic violence, attitudes to the issue and risk factors for victims. Women considered to be at a higher risk of experiencing violence were categorised according to vulnerability factors such as age, disability, homelessness, Indigenous status, ethnicity and English language competency. The report highlighted the link between these risk factors and issues which might prevent women from disclosing experiences of violence. The report also highlights the significant economic cost of dealing with domestic violence. The report concludes by explaining the implementation of the Council of Australian Government's 2009 National Plan to reduce violence against women and their children.
