Notes:  This article presents the findings from a US study of 134 women ages 45-85 who gave feedback through focus groups about the barriers they experienced when seeking help for intimate partner violence. Based on their research, author propose a model of barriers to help-seeking that includes perpetrator behaviours (isolation, intimidation and jealousy), internal factors (protecting family, self-blame, powerlessness, hopelessness and secrecy) and external factors (family response, clergy response, justice system response and community responsiveness).
