Notes: | Reports on research undertaken by Sisters Inside, an independent community organisation which exists to advocate for the human rights of women in the criminal justice system in Queensland. The research explores the needs and issues for non-English-speaking women in prison in Queensland. NESB women comprise 5-10 per cent of the 280-300 women incarcerated in Southeast Queensland prisons. NESB women in prison have experienced extensive amounts of violence before imprisonment: 85 per cent have been sexually assaulted and 89 per cent have experienced domestic violence. Many continue to experience domestic violence while in prison via phone calls and visits. They also face the day to day abuse that exists in prison life. Argues that NESB women in prison need a co-ordinated specialist service to address their needs which to date have been ignored in prison reform. |
