Notes:  This US study explores the experiences of battered gay and bisexual men. Surveys were distributed to identified domestic violence victims in San Francisco, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York. Fifty two of the 111 surveys were received in time to analyse 234 variables about relationship data, physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse, help-seeking behaviour, reasons for remaining, and subject demographics. The findings suggest that gay and bisexual men, and heterosexual and lesbian women experience similar patterns, forms, frequency and impact of domestic violence. Unlike a significant number of female victims, gay and bisexual men do not stay in the abusive relationship because of financial dependency; an HIV-status is a more frequent factor. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.
