Notes:  This presents findings of a US study that looked at the association between children’s exposure to maternal intimate partner violence (IPV) and behaviour problems, as measured by the parent’s report of the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). The sample consisted of 167 two- to 17-year-old children of Seattle women with police-reported or court-reported intimate partner abuse. The CBCL normative population was the comparison group. It found that children exposed to maternal IPV were more likely to have borderline to clinical scores on externalising (aggressive, delinquent) behaviour and total behaviour problems compared to the CBCL normative sample. Children who were exposed to maternal IPV and were also victims of child maltreatment were more likely to have borderline to clinical scores on internalising (anxious, depressed) behaviours and total behavioural problems. It concludes that attention needs to be given to the mental health of children living in households with IPV.
