Notes:  Overview: This Issues Paper provides presentations from a forum organised by the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse. The forum examined policing models and their capacity to better respond to victims of domestic and family violence. The paper is based on the three presentations from the forum, which explored integrated domestic and family violence policing practices established in London, Tasmania and Victoria.

Discussion: The three jurisdictions discussed in the paper present different legislative, service and historical contexts. However, in terms of an approach, they are all characterised by: clear aims and objectives; a research base; a consultation and evaluation base; use of a feminist understanding of domestic violence; and an acknowledgement of cultural diversity. All three demonstrate integration across different levels of government and through internal police strata. The three presenters also emphasise the importance of specialised, robust training around domestic and family violence for all police and to have strong, committed leadership from government and internally. Finally, in these three case studies, the police response to domestic violence forms only one part of an integrated, multi-service response.
