Notes:	Describes the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at documenting the childhood abuse experiences of a sample of battered women and assessing both their perceptions of the abuse and its prevalence. The results suggest a majority of women currently experiencing abuse had experienced some form of child maltreatment and that such repeated exposure to violence had compromised their ability for healthy family relationships, particularly with their children. The implications of these findings for paediatric health care providers and the importance of screening for child maltreatment within a ‘family-centred’ approach, are highlighted.
