Notes:  Considers some of the prominent theoretical approaches to community violence prevention that have attempted to explain the varying capacities of communities to minimise child maltreatment, youth violence and domestic violence. Then goes on to review some of the advantages and disadvantages of utilising these theories to build strategies for violence prevention. Specific approaches to designing and structuring preventive programmes so that they contribute to the capacity of the community to prevent violence are suggested. The need for further research into how community capacity for violence prevention might be measured and enhanced is also highlighted.
