Notes:  Looks at the changes undergone by the Domestic Violence Crisis Service in the ACT as a result of a major review of the service that took place in 1997/98. The review concluded that both clients and service providers were unhappy with the service provided by the DVCS; clients felt they were not listened to, that DVCS had set solutions for their problems, and that it tried to break up their families; while service providers perceived the DVCS as being unwilling to work with men. The DVCS sees the safety of women and children as their priority goal and have realised that engaging respectfully with women’s partners was a major part of widening their approach to a client’s needs. They found that changing the language used to define the situation played a major role in this new approach. Altering the terminology from ‘victim’ or ‘survivor’ to ‘women who have been subjected to domestic violence’ and from ‘perpetrator’ to ‘men who use violence in their relationships’ made the DVCS more aware of clients as individuals and more open to hearing women’s stories.
