Notes: | This US study surveyed mothers of children seen in a sexual abuse evaluation clinic (University of Arizona) regarding other forms of abuse. Recognises that while child sexual abuse may bring children to the attention of authorities, children are often experiencing other forms of abuse such as domestic violence. A database compiled social, demographic and physical findings for children seen at the clinic during 1992-1998. The accompanying parent (mother) was also asked about her own history of childhood sexual or physical abuse as well as current domestic abuse. Results indicated that 54% of children were exposed to domestic violence within their own homes and 28% of mothers reported personal experience with physical and sexual abuse in their own childhood. Asserts that exploration of the full spectrum of abuse a child may be exposed to is essential if practitioners are to adequately care for sexually abused children. Highlights the need for comprehensive services that support the child and other members of the family who have also been victimised. |
