Reviews recent research into the incidence of child abuse in the context of parental separation and divorce and the dynamic relationship that exists between the two. Challenging the myth that allegations of child abuse in separating families are merely a tactical weapon used by parents, the evidence presented reveals a clear bi-directional relationship between child abuse and family separation, and highlights the need for a coordination of agencies involved, such as the family court and child protection. A new model of intervention in contact disputes involving child abuse allegations is outlined and the findings of a preliminary evaluation of the programme discussed.
