Notes: | Looks at the link between the various forms of violence in the home and the abuse of companion animals. Using studies in this area from the US, UK and Australia, the article illustrates how threats against and actual abuse of pets may be used to maintain control within the family and, also, how concern for pets may influence a woman’s decision to leave an abusive home. Evidence is presented to show that children exposed to violence in the home may then abuse animals themselves and also show a greater potential to abuse others as adults. Describes the projects, Paws for Kids and Feminists for Animal Rights, which address the issue of fostering pets of women and children entering domestic violence refuges and suggests a cooperative, multi-agency response to family violence and animal abuse in Australia to facilitate early detection of family violence. |
