Notes:  Draws upon an earlier study of child maltreatment cases in Canada to identify key differences between the experiences of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal families. The comparative analysis suggests Indigenous families are more likely to be investigated for child neglect, less likely to be reported for cases of sexual or physical abuse and are over-represented at every stage of intervention, from investigation through to placement in out-of-home care. A disparity in socio-economic status of Indigenous and non-Indigenous families is also identified. The need for further research into the experiences of Aboriginal families in child maltreatment investigations and follow-up is suggested and the necessity for development of alternative approaches to service delivery advocated.
