Notes:  Provides an outline of an evaluation of a domestic violence screening intervention programme conducted in a northeast US primary health care setting, focusing on the incidence of depression and anxiety following various types of child and intimate partner abuse. Links between domestic and family violence and mental health problems established in the literature are reviewed and comparisons between the long-term effects of child abuse and the mental health effects of adult victimisation are drawn. Suggests that both childhood and adult victimisation are potential predictors for mental health problems and that the former is often a predictor of the latter. The importance of assessing clients’ past and present history of abuse is emphasised, as is the need for more extensive and effective preventative mechanisms.
