Notes: | Gives an overview of the various factors involved in determining the impact of exposure to violence on children and young people, and the research methodologies used to study them. Although the variables inherent in a child's resilience and vulnerability are recognised as mechanisms by which exposure to violence affects children, the present research picture has been unable to predict how children will fare or which children will show long-term effects. Examines a number of theoretical and methodological considerations in the examination of developmental processes. Evaluates studies that examine developmental risks and, also, explores research that investigates a family's vulnerability to multiple forms of family violence. Concludes that a unique combination of variables acts to determine a child's response to exposure to violence and that further research is needed to determine best treatment and prevention strategies. |
