Highlights some of the contradictions which have arisen from recent changes to child protection legislation in Canada, requiring that domestic abuse of women be regarded as a form of child abuse. Suggests that the legislation lacks uniformity with family law legislation, has a tendency to limit, rather than support, women’s choices in violent relationships and places professionals working with abused women in a ‘double bind’. Although various initiatives have been undertaken to address these concerns, it is argued that there remains a lack of recognition of the needs of women and the complexity of abusive relationships within legislative, judicial and welfare bodies.
