Notes:  Expands the definition of how children ‘witness’ domestic violence. Reviews the findings of 31 research articles from the US, Australia and Israel regarding behavioural, emotional and cognitive-functioning problems associated with exposure to domestic violence. (Review includes only studies which identify and separate direct abuse of children and exposure to domestic violence). Outlines methodological issues in this body of research and also explores factors which mediate the problems experienced. Cautions that these studies can only show associations, not cause and effect. Argues against automatically defining witnessing violence as child abuse because some children are not adversely affected, and as this ignores the efforts of mothers to create safety for themselves and their children.
