Notes:  Overview: This Australian article reports on the Chronic Maltreatment Study, which explores the maltreatment of children utilising data from a statutory child protection service. The study discussed in the paper aimed to examine whether some children experience chronic rather than isolated maltreatment.

The paper presents detailed data and case studies, and analyses and discusses the results. The paper concludes that programs targeting poverty, exclusion and disadvantage could possibly assist in preventing child abuse and neglect, and that child protection services, policy makers and funding bodies may need to consider providing early intervention and long term support to more families in order to protect children from chronic maltreatment. A new conceptual approach for describing chronic maltreatment is proposed.
