Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a retrospective cohort study conducted in Seattle, aimed at ascertaining the relationship between obtaining a permanent and/or temporary protection order and the risk of subsequent police reported domestic violence. A brief introduction to the role and purpose of protection orders is provided and the scarcity of research into the effectiveness of such orders is noted. Concludes that while permanent protection orders are significantly associated with a decrease in the risk of police reported domestic violence, temporary orders are not. Limitations of the US study and the differences between these and previous research findings are then discussed.
