General Overview: This US article reports on a study examining a model of women’s preparedness to end domestic violence relationships, by examining cognitive and emotional factors to predict readiness to change through a transtheoretical model (TM).
Objective: The study aimed to evaluate cognitive and affective components that would predict behavioural change in preparedness to end an abusive relationship, by examining how cognitive behavioural theory (CBT) could apply to the TM of change for victims.
Methods: A total of 85 women in the US were recruited for the study from domestic violence shelters. A range of measures and inventories were used, including the Abusive Behaviour Inventory (ABI), Relationship Attribution Measure-Revised (RAM-R), Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), State-Transit Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), and Stages of Change Questionnaire (SOCQ).
Discussion: A literature review was conducted for the study. Selected factors were identified in the literature to represent cognitive predictors (attribution and attachment style) and affective predictors (depression, anxiety, hopelessness and anger) of readiness to terminate an abusive relationship.
Conclusions: This model attempted to integrate some of the intrapsychic components from the domestic violence literature, with the suggestion that future research could include both internal and external influences (such as family or societal pressures) that shape a woman’s decision to terminate a domestic violence relationship.
