Notes: | This article analyses community development approaches used over a 10 year period, 1997-2007, by the New South Wales (NSW) Regional Violence Against Women (VAW) Specialists. Approaches to community development are applied to three VAW Strategy initiatives - Staying Home Leaving Violence, Bourke's Yaama Festival and Kinks and Bends: what's the go with relationships? The article argues that while community development practices facilitated the success of many VAW program initiatives aimed at responding to and preventing violence against women, community development was also one of the reasons behind the decision of the NSW Government to remove the Strategy to Reduce Violence Against Women. This reflects a government move from a 'grassroots' or 'bottom-up' community development approach, to one characterised by 'top-down' bureaucratic service integration. |
