Notes:  This article presents a US study that identified risk factors associated with the co-occurrence of wife and child abuse by analysing data from the 1985 US National Family Violence Survey (subsample size of 2,733). A literature review on the theoretical background is provided. One-way ANOVA and chi-square analyses were done to compare characteristics of parents, children and households among subgroups of families. Main differences are found between 3 types of homes (those with child abuse alone, wife abuse alone, or co-occurrence of wife and child abuse). This suggests distinct aetiologies and processes. It found correlates of the co-occurrence of wife and child abuse with less education, worse health, increased husband drug use and increased reports of depression. However, commonalities between the groups are also found. For example, no evidence of racial or ethnic differences was found. A history of violence and norms promoting family violence are risk factors also common to child abuse, wife abuse and the co-occurrence of both. Results may be relevant to practitioners and researchers interested in risk factors.
