Provides an overview of the development of the concept of battered woman syndrome, its use in the US in expert court testimony, counselling, legal and social advocacy and the various purposes for which the concept is employed, before presenting a critique of the syndrome model in the context of domestic violence. Suggests the concept oversimplifies women’s experiences, lacks clear definition, is not necessarily relevant to understanding the legal, social and economic issues related to domestic violence and has the potential to pathologise women’s experiences. Concludes that reliance on a single construct to explain and/or understand battered women’s experiences is clearly inadequate.
