Notes:  This article reports on the findings of a domestic violence screening project in the emergency department (ED) of a large US trauma centre. A full-time trained domestic violence (DV) advocacy coordinator conducted direct patient interviews over a period of one year. The results were compared with previous studies of the incidence and prevalence of DV ascertained through written surveys and direct questioning by a range of health care professionals.

Results were comparable to previous data on the lifetime prevalence of DV, but the acute incidence of DV reported in this study was higher than in similar projects involving direct patient interviews.
