Introduces domestic violence and homelessness as significant health and human rights issues for Australian women and lists some of the key findings of the Women’s Safety Australia 1996 report. Outlines the major findings of a research project conducted by WESNET with women from non-English speaking backgrounds, in rural and regional Australia, which revealed they face significant disadvantages compared to the average Australian woman. Similarly, Indigenous women, young women, women on farms and women in mining communities were identified as being high risk groups for various reasons. Highlights the emergence of women’s groups in response to domestic violence. Argues seven major factors emerge from the research as contributing to domestic violence, including geographical and social isolation, presence of firearms and lack of services. Other, more recent research advocates for holistic and integrated responses that challenge long held assumptions and optimises women’s choices.
