Notes:  Drawing on research conducted primarily in the USA, Canada and the UK, this article explores the proposition that the forms of abuse to which animals are exposed very often parallel those to which humans are subjected and aims to raise professional awareness of the relationship between human and animal abuse. Specific emphasis is placed on the need for welfare and legal agencies to develop coordinated and strategic responses to the experiences of victims whose pets have also been the target of violent and/or controlling behaviour. Research currently being undertaken in Australia is discussed and the demand for further intervention in this area is highlighted.
