Notes:  This paper provides some guiding principles for police officers who confront domestic violence incidents. Since a significant number of homicides are the consequence of domestic disputes, special attention is drawn into the removal of firearms from domestic violence situations. The NSW Crimes Act definition must be consulted to ascertain if the conflict can be classified as domestic violence and for action accordingly. Special police powers of entry are conceded in such situations. Police might access a dwelling by invitation, warrant or without consent to prevent a breach of the peace. The powers to search for and seize firearms are widely discussed, including suspension and revocation of licenses and permits, prohibited weapons, disposal and recording of surrender or seized firearms and police responsibilities when issuing a suspension notice. It is specified that police officers who abuse their partners must be treated as other perpetrators. The local area commander is in charge of deciding whether or not the abusive police officer should hold onto his/her firearm.
