Notes:  General overview: This international article examines the relationship between domestic violence and the right to housing. Objective: Its aim is to highlight the links to the socio-economic conditions around and leading to domestic violence.

Methods: Analyses of the standards regulating housing rights in international law, as well as a review of the international instruments and leading cases are given.

Results: Review of the existing international instruments that address violence against women shows their limits in terms of affording protection to women from domestic violence since they focus on civil and political rights and ignore women’s housing and property rights so that they do not protect women where they need it the most, that is, at home.

Conclusions: It looks at some normative issues and suggests the need for international organisations and human rights organisations to focus on working with women’s rights. It concludes by recommending a gender-sensitive interpretation of the human right to housing.
