Notes: | Reviews international data from low income countries (in South America, Africa, India, Papua New Guinea) to reveal the incidence and nature of gender based violence in developing countries. Considers the meaning of violence in various cultures, and the difficulties in defining ‘domestic violence’. Uses a cross cultural perspective to explore 3 practices used in certain cultures to justify violence against women. These are marital rape, dowry death and exposure to STD’s/HIV. Strategies needed to fight gender based violence are outlined, relying on collaboration, sustainability and cultural integration. Discusses the damage to women’s physical and psychological health including PTSD, depression, substance abuse and injuries. Places the issue of gender based violence in the context of human rights, requiring a social and legal response, backed by culturally sensitive research. |
