Notes:	This article outlines the development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and analyses whether it is a useful concept on which to base intervention in relation to gender-based violence and domestic violence. It highlights aspects of Judith Herman's original intervention framework, which have remained undeveloped, particularly with respect to the ideas of social support and the need for an active social movement (both of which, it is argued, have been marginalised in clinical psychology, and in the professional and individualised approaches to working with survivors of domestic violence). It suggests that redeveloping these ideas would enhance the work with survivors and women's services. It argues for group support and informal support networks around a survivor and attention to post-traumatic growth rather than a focus on 'disorder'. It looks at the need for connection by mental health services with local women's groups that provide the political and social responses to domestic violence.
