Notes: | This paper discusses the results from a domestic violence screening questionnaire conducted in neighbourhood-based child welfare preventive service agencies in the US. The aim is to avoid the unnecessary placement of children into foster care and to prevent child maltreatment. The project’s purpose is to change the manner in which child welfare preventive service agencies identify and work with battered women. The findings show that: training enhanced identification; women appreciated being asked about abuse; and that women felt better able to protect themselves and their children after disclosure of domestic violence to the worker. The intake questionnaire was a key part of the Family Prevention Project, a programme aimed at addressing the co-existence of child and women abuse in families that are known to the child welfare system. The need for comprehensive assessment on intake in child welfare agencies is highlighted by the findings that almost 3 times more women reported being battered as had been referred. |
