Notes:  Approaching the issues of domestic and sexual violence in Aboriginal communities from an historical perspective, this article argues that the emergence of these problems is the result of learned behaviour over years of cultural abuse. The extent of violence in Indigenous communities is highlighted and the need for developing more appropriate responses, that acknowledge the impact of history, is discussed. Specific strategies are suggested and an outline of the key characteristics of effective, culturally sensitive programmes is provided.
