Notes:  Discusses the processes and findings of a study in North Queensland aimed at exploring young women’s experiences and perceptions of male violence, placing particular emphasis on the contradictions between media portrayals and popular images of female success or ‘girl power’ and women’s material reality and continuing experiences of inequality. Suggests that while young women are generally aware of domestic violence, there remains an unwillingness to engage in a gendered and/or societal analysis of it. Argues current conservative interpretations of feminism individualise women’s experiences of violence, reducing it to a matter of personal choice, and advocates the importance of discourses that recognise the gendered nature of social relations and the role of gender in constructing social inequities.
