Notes:	In Australia until recently policy responses to domestic and family violence have meant that women experiencing violence, rather than being supported to remain in their homes, have been forced or encouraged to leave. That women and their children have to leave their homes to escape domestic and family violence has been seen as a social and policy failure in dealing with violence and its perpetrators (McFerran 2007). While staying in a home where violence has occurred is not a solution for all women, recent policy responses recognise that staying should be an option. However, while this represents a positive shift, there may still be multiple barriers to gaining secure housing following domestic violence. These barriers include an economic dimension to domestic and family violence which is yet to receive adequate attention in our responses to violence.
