Notes:  Overview: Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy raises the risk of pregnancy complications and unfavourable birth outcomes. In this study, US researchers reviewed the prenatal and hospital obstetric charts for 2873 women who gave birth between January 2000 and March 2002 in a north-eastern city in the United States.

After controlling for various sociodemographic variables, intimate partner violence was found to be a significant and independent risk factor for pregnancy trauma and placental abruption.

The authors discuss the implications this has for intervention guidelines for pregnant women and IPV screening.
