Notes:  Overview: This Australian article summarises a federal government commitment to reform the response of aged care facilities to sexual and physical assault.

Discussion: In 2006, the Australian federal government announced a commitment of $90.2 million to reform the response of aged care facilities to sexual and physical assault. This article provides an outline of the background to the federal policy reforms, involving a lack of documentation of the nature of violence against older women, a resulting lack of relevant support services and a widely reported incident of sexual assault of residents of a Victorian nursing home.

The nature of these reforms, their policy implications and their likely impact are discussed and the article concludes that the reforms have potential to offer clear reporting mechanisms.
