Notes:  SAAP (Supported Accommodation Assistance Program) data show links between homelessness and social disadvantage and exclusion. The author argues that family homelessness must be tackled by addressing both the widening gap between rich and poor and violence against women and children in the home. Recommends a comprehensive whole of government response to homelessness while acknowledging the importance of the development of the National Homeless Strategy (NHS). Suggests improving the service response to homeless families, especially in the areas of: unmet children’s needs (counselling, accommodation, school liaison, child care, general support and advocacy); long-term housing; and for Indigenous homeless people. The extreme level of homelessness of this latter group reflects extreme disadvantage. Calls for a commitment to allocate resources to enable the implementation of the NHS.
