Notes:	"September 2004" Provides an overview of key findings and issues emerging from recent reports, policy documents and research into family violence and sexual assault in Indigenous communities, highlighting some of the tensions existing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous understandings of and approaches to violence. The first section of the paper focuses on the incidence of violence and sexual assault in Indigenous communities, problems of under-reporting and some of the ways in which services have attempted to address, in a holistic manner, the causes of violence in Indigenous contexts. Attention is then shifted to government responses across Australia to violence against women generally and how these responses address, or fail to address, the specific needs of Indigenous women and children. The final section of the paper reviews a range of innovative responses by services 'on the ground' in Indigenous communities, providing excerpts from interviews with individual workers and a summary of their perceptions of the impact of government responses.
