Notes:  Reports on a study that analyses women’s fear of crime based on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 1996 Women’s Safety Survey. The findings were consistent with previous research, revealing that physical and social vulnerability has an impact on women’s perceptions of safety. Experiences of domestic and other forms of violence were significant factors in establishing the intensity of the fear. Women absent from the formal labour force and women involved in a relationship or with young children stated higher levels of fear. The latter was deemed altruistic fear, which incorporates concerns about both their own personal safety and that of their family and friends. While women from non-English speaking backgrounds had less risk of violence than their English-speaking counterparts, they disclosed more fear of crime.
