Notes: | The study presents preliminary data to evaluate the efficacy of a programme implemented in the USA on abused women and their children. Advocates worked with selected families for sixteen weeks, assisting the women to access community resources and the children to participate in educational and recreational activities. The well-being of the experimental and control group was measured over eight months. The families that received advocacy intervention yielded higher levels of self-esteem and self-competence than the control group. The researchers, who have completed a number of domestic violence studies, pay special attention to the experiences of child witnesses. A review of the literature that addresses children’s contact with domestic violence is also included. Implications for research and policy practice are discussed. |
