Notes:  Outlines the context and methodology of a study aimed at assessing the views of Queensland and South Australian victim advocates in relation to the use of restorative justice models for responding to gendered violence. A background to the debate surrounding the use of alternatives to the criminal justice system to address violence against women is provided and some of the definitional issues that arise in assessing restorative justice techniques are identified. The findings suggest that, contrary to popular assumptions, victim advocates are not wholly opposed to restorative justice strategies and believe they possess many positive qualities, but stress that there are inadequacies inherent in both mainstream and alternative criminal justice responses. The need to move beyond an ‘either/or’ approach to the question of which response is most appropriate, is advocated.
