Notes:  Report on ‘good practice’ in domestic violence services as part of an evaluation of Phase 1 of the Federal Government’s Partnerships Against Domestic Violence Initiative. Szirom explains the use of the term ‘good practice’ in the human services sector in comparison to ‘best practice’ as used in the business sector. Four types of projects, as defined by their target community, are discussed, and the characteristics necessary for programme success are listed. Projects with young people, programmes for men who use violence, programmes in Indigenous communities and programmes for rural and remote communities each involve issues specific to that group which need to be addressed in any evaluation of ‘good practice’. In the broader context of overall service delivery, two sets of characteristics of good practice are seen to be essential: one set as related to the host agency, and the second to the worker(s). Awareness of these characteristics of good practice will assist funding bodies in their selection process as well as applicants in their programme planning.
