Notes: | This study explores the responses of Vietnamese American women to intimate partner violence and the implications of gender structure, culture and immigration on their efforts to access assistance. Qualitative data were collected from interviews with 34 Vietnamese American women who have experienced domestic violence and 11 practitioners from the same ethnic background, living in four Vietnamese communities in the United States. The findings reveal that their personal networks, the criminal justice system and social service agencies are contacted for help. The factors affecting Vietnamese American women decisions to seek help are: economic dependency and social isolation; immigration law and race relations; and cultural continuity and change. |
