This Australian paper provides a breakdown of results from van de Zandt and Webb’s study which sought to profile Legal Aid’s highest service users. More specifically, they studied the 50 people who used legal aid services most often, between July 2005 and June 2010. The study revealed that children and young people 19 years and under made up 80% of this sample. Results presented categorise study participants by age, gender and country of birth, with other findings relating to age of first contact with Legal Aid and the number of incidents for which each participant used legal aid services. Issues such as mental health, behavioural issues, disability, alcohol and/or drug use, witnessing violence at home, neglect or abuse, homelessness, time spent in juvenile detention centres, and school expulsions or suspensions were also discussed.

The authors’ presentation of their research results highlights the complexity of these clients’ needs. Van de Zandt and Webb explain the challenges involved in fulfilling the multidimensional needs of these clients where legal and non-legal services do not work collaboratively. These results indicate the importance of developing interagency and multidisciplinary partnerships, in conjunction with targeted, specialist services that address the particular needs of these disadvantaged clients, to provide them with the most effective support.
